Here’s Your Handy ‘Path to College’ Calendar of Events, Prepared by Wendy Segal Tutoring

FOR ALL STUDENTS

10th Grade

DECEMBER – JANUARY

  • Consider registering to attend summer college for fun or for college credits.  Research in December and apply in January

11th Grade

OCTOBER

  • Take PSATs (see your guidance department for sign up procedure)

DECEMBER – JANUARY

  • Consider registering to attend summer college for fun or for college credits.  Research in December and apply in January

JANUARY

  • Get your PSAT scores online.  If your scores don’t reflect your ability, start SAT and/or ACT prep classes or TUTORING
  • Begin to prepare a list of potential colleges.  (If you’re going to visit colleges in April, you have to start building a list now!)
    • Check online sources like collegeboard.org or usnews.com (especially the paid subscription – it’s worth it!)
    • Meet with your guidance counselor and ask for recommendations or a list
    • On each potential college’s website, complete “send me more information” page

MARCH

  • Prepare for college visits in April
    • Group colleges by geography (e.g., Upstate N.Y. tour, Pennsylvania/Delaware/Maryland tour, Boston area tour)
    • Make reservations for college tours on individual college websites
    • Book hotels/motels where necessary

APRIL

  • Visit colleges during spring break.  (Don’t wait until May or June when colleges are finished for the semester – you won’t have the same experience as when the college students and professors are in session.)

JUNE

  • Before faculty members become over-committed, ask two teachers to give you a college recommendation in the fall

JULY

  • Finalize college list
    • List schools in deadline order (some will be early action and others will be regular decision)
  • Prepare a resume to give to teachers, other endorsers and interviewers

AUGUST

  • Create an account on commonapp.org
    • Print out Common App essay questions
    • Write several drafts of your Common App essay
    • Fill out Common Application – but leave SAT/ACT scores blank (HINT: Print each page as you complete it.  It will save a lot of time for non-Common App school applications!)

12th Grade

SEPTEMBER

  • Complete Naviance online if your school participates
  • Thank teachers who have agreed to provide you with a college recommendation (as a way to remind them)
  • Complete Common App essay and supplement essays, and upload
  • Visit a few more colleges, especially mid-range schools (ie, neither reach schools nor schools likely to admit you)

OCTOBER

  • Complete and submit financial aid (FAFSA) forms
  • Apply to Early Decision and Early Action colleges
    • Update Naviance as necessary
    • Complete and send Common App and any other applications
    • Provide guidance department with required notification

NOVEMBER

  • Complete any remaining regular decision applications by the end of Thanksgiving break

DECEMBER

  • Receive Early Decision or Early Action decisions

MARCH

  • Receive Regular Decision responses

APRIL

  • Revisit colleges if necessary or attend “accepted student” day or weekend
  • Send deposit to the college you will attend (must be received by the college on or before May 1)

MAY

  • Update Naviance or tell your Guidance Dept. which school you will attend, so final transcript can be sent

FOR HONOR STUDENTS

9th Grade

JUNE

  • Take SAT Biology Subject Test if you’re in Honors/Advanced Biology

10th Grade

JUNE

  • Take SAT Biology Subject Test if you’re in Honors Biology
  • Take SAT Chemistry Subject Test if you’re in Honors Chemistry

11th Grade

MARCH

  • Sign up for June SAT Subject Tests (sign up for two–you can change which ones up to the day of the test)

FOR ACT TEST TAKERS

11th Grade

JANUARY

  • Get your PSAT scores online.  If your scores don’t reflect your ability, start ACT prep classes or tutoring

FEBRUARY

  • Sign up at act.org for April ACT

MARCH

  • Sign up for June ACT

APRIL

  • Take first ACT

AUGUST

  • Sign up for September ACT or October ACT

12th Grade

SEPTEMBER

  • Retake ACT now or in October

OCTOBER

  • Retake ACT
  • Apply to Early Decision and Early Action colleges
    • Complete form on act.org for them to send ACT scores, if taken

FOR SAT TEST TAKERS

11th Grade

JANUARY

  • Get your PSAT scores online.  If your scores don’t reflect your ability, start SAT prep classes or TUTORING
  • Sign up at collegeboard.org for your March or May SAT IF you plan to take the SATs

MARCH

  • Take your first SAT now or in May
  • Sign up for May SAT

MAY

  • Take SAT

JUNE

  • Take SAT or SAT Subject Tests (you can’t take both SAT and Subject tests on same day).  If you’re taking subject tests, take two:  Consider a science, foreign language, US History

AUGUST

  • Sign up for October SAT or October SAT Subject tests

12th Grade

OCTOBER

  • Retake SAT or SAT Subject tests.
  • Apply to Early Decision and Early Action colleges
    • Complete form on collegeboard.org for them to send SATs and SAT Subject Tests if taken

NOVEMBER

  • Retake SAT or SAT Subject Tests for final time
